All Microsoft Windows users will be required to install an antivirus client. Users are given the option of using Cal Poly's licensed version Symantec Endpoint Protection available free of charge to all students, staff, and faculty. Alternatively, users may opt to purchase a license from another company for an antivirus software, which is fine to do so. In the past some students failed to uninstall previous antivirus clients, and they ended up with corrupted operating systems. Please take note that we are not responsible for any corrupted operating systems or lost data should you fail to properly uninstall your previous antivirus client. Please note: There will be no ResNet office support for any antivirus clients other than Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Downloads

All Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 users are highly encouraged, but not required,to install Microsoft Security Essentials and Brightfort Software's SpywareBlaster. All Microsoft Windows 2000 users are highly encouraged, but not required, to install Cal Poly's licensed Webroot Spy Sweeper Home Edition. You may optionally install other antispyware programs. In fact, we recommend users download and install Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Safer-Networking's Spybot - Search & Destroy. All of these antispyware programs may be obtained for free.

Web Browser Notes

All users will need Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer to complete all Microsoft Windows Updates. For security reasons, Windows Internet Explorer 7 or later is highly recommended. Outside of using Windows Internet Explorer for updates, ResNet heavily encourages users to explore safer browser applications such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chromeand Opera, all of which may be obtained for free.

Firewall Notes

We do not recommend you use a aftermarket firewall. We protect users at the Internet connection with a strong, hardware firewall. Most users find that their firewalls only restrict them from gaining access to campus resources. If you do wish to use a firewall, we recommend that you use the built-in Windows firewall. If you choose to use a firewall, we will only support residents using the built-in Windows firewall. This means that we will be unable to assist with configuring your firewall to allow applications the necessary network access if it is not the built-in Windows firewall. You may not use a hardware firewall on the residence hall network.

Just as Charlie won a golden ticket to the chocolate factory, Cal Poly Pomona has secured a golden ticket – a trip to Microsoft world headquarters in Redmond, Wash.

The golden ticket is an opportunity for a university to attract recruiters from Microsoft by sending a student on an all-expenses-paid informational visit. Based on the skills and personality of the student, as well as the university’s curriculum and reputation, Microsoft decides whether to recruit new hires from the university the following year.

“This is an extreme honor for our campus,” says Michael Marinoff, associate director of the Career Center. “Microsoft formally recruits from only a small handful of universities in the United States and internationally, and from only one other campus in Southern California, which is UCLA.”

Cal Poly Pomona caught the attention of Microsoft recruiters when computer science senior Jacob Curtis wowed them during a one-day visit to their headquarters in May, Marinoff says.

“Jacob was a perfect example of our Cal Poly Pomona students: He was knowledgeable, came ready to work and possessed excellent communication and teamwork abilities,” Marinoff says. “Because he impressed them with his skills, they want to recruit more of our students.”

Curtis says he learned about Microsoft’s team structure for engineers and programmers, and he realized that a position at the technology giant is within reach. Best sites for csgo skins.

“Microsoft isn’t a big, mysterious company that’s not nice to work with. They have some of the smartest people in the world in jeans and T-shirts who are excited about their jobs,” Curtis says. “I’m not really scared of them anymore. I’m not reluctant to try out and apply.”

This fall, seniors graduating in June 2011 who are majoring in computer engineering or computer science will be granted an automatic interview at Microsoft headquarters in Washington. The students must have a paid internship during the spring or summer at a notable technology, aerospace, IT or engineering company. An information session will be held at the Career Center during fall quarter.
